Each province and territory has
its own regulations for apprenticeships that vary by trade.
Generally here is how the system
works:
Someone wanting to learn
a trade finds a way to get on the payroll with an employer for
on-the-job training under the watch of experienced workers
After completing a
certain number of hours on the job, usually 44 to 46 weeks, the
apprentice takes 6 to 8 weeks of classroom instruction
The apprentice must pass
an exam to graduate into the next year’s work and classroom cycle
After 3 to 4 years,
apprentices with enough hours of experience who pass qualifying exams
receive certification as journeymen in their set of skills
Additional training can
broaden their certification
Passing an additional federal
exam brings a Red Seal that allows them to work in other provinces
