What are employability skills?

Employability skills are those skills you need to have in order to get a job and keep a job.  In short, you need them because employers need you to have them.

Major changes are taking place in the world of work.  Canadians no longer have one job with one employer for their entire work life.  New technology has resulted in an increase in part-time and temporary employment opportunities and employers need to be able to accurately assess the skills of prospective employees.

Prospective employees need to know what skills they have developed, and be able to explain clearly what they are capable of doing, in order to market themselves effectively.  The Conference Board of Canada has identified basic skills (see list below) common to all types of employment and career opportunities.

Employability Skills:

·        Organization Skills

·        Working with Others

·        Adaptability

·        Responsibility

·        Enthusiasm and Motivation

·        Communication Skills

·        Think and Solve Problems

·        Manage Information

·        Participate in Projects and Tasks

·        Learn Continuously

·        Demonstrate Positive Attitudes and Behaviour

The 411 on Call Centres

From:  Job Postings, May 2004, by Ileana Brito.

“Call Centre positions are not just jobs anymore.  Call Centres provide you with a foundation whereby you can really grow your career”, Roula Pappas, Hudson’s Bay Company.

The magazine, Job Postings, states that the call centre industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in the Canadian economy (Ontario is listed as one of the provinces experiencing the most growth).  There are over 14,000 call centres in Canada (with over 50% of all call centres located in

Ontario) and the industry employs over 500,000 Canadians.

Voted one of the best countries to outsource call centre operations to, Canada offers distinct advantages over other hotspots like China, India and Mexico including a favourable exchange rate, a well-educated work force and lower turnover rates.

What kind of educational background do you need?  Hudson’s Bay Company Human Resource Manager, Roula Pappas, indicates that there is no one particular field they recruit directly from.   However, with the emergence of college Call Centre programs, she reports that they can now be more selective as applicants bring additional skill sets and competencies, such as direct call centre experience and educations.
