QUESTION

I am currently living in Toronto and I am looking to find work in the Northumberland County area for the months of June, July, and August. I will be living in Cobourg, but I have access to a car.  Can you point me in the right direction?

ANSWER

Unfortunately CERC is not an employment agency that matches individuals with jobs, but I can definitely point you in the right directions.

There are three types of agencies that may be able to help you out.  The first would be the Temporary Agencies in our area.  Once registered with any of these organizations, they match you to employers who are seeking employees on a temporary basis.  This could give you the opportunity to work in a number of different companies.  Most of the work would be in an industrial setting.  Below are the names and contact information for the four agencies in the Cobourg/Port Hope area:

Manpower:
1011 Elgin Street, Cobourg, ON  K9A 5J4
Phone:  905-373-0967
Fax:  905-373-8329

Qualified Personnel Solutions (QPS)
257 Division St, Suite 102
Cobourg, ON  K9A 3P9
Phone:  905-373-4400
Fax:  905-373-4401

The Staffing Connection: (new to the area)
240 Division Street, Cobourg, ON  K9A 3P8
Phone:  905-377-1611
Fax:  905-377-0495

IS2 Staffing:
1040 Division St., Unit #6
Cobourg, ON  K9A 5X5
Phone:  905-372-3738
Fax:  905-372-3718

For the temporary agencies, the registration typically lasts a couple of hours for some testing (WHMIS) and pre-screening.  If going this route, it is always a good idea to register with a number of the agencies as your opportunities are increased.  Often certain companies work through a particular agency so different agencies have different employers using their services.

The second option applies if you are a student.  The government assists with summer employment through a program called Summer Job Services.  Most local employers choose to hire through this option for the summer months as the government is assisting with a wage subsidy.

Locally the offices are located at:

Cobourg:
1005 Elgin Street West, Suite 318, Cobourg, ON  K9A 5J4
Phone:  905-372-6865

Port Hope:
12 Mill Street, Port Hope, ON  L1A 2S5
Phone:  905-885-4842

There is also the third option, Job Connect, if you have been out of school and out of work (on a full-time basis) for 6-8 weeks and are between the ages of 16-24.  The contact information is the same as that for Summer Job Services above.

I hope this helps you out.  Good luck!!
